About the presenter:

Mike Erickson is a graduate of the Portland State University School of Business. After graduating, he started his transportation career at Airborne Express, where he was one of the top district sales managers. In 1992, Mike founded AFMS with the idea that “Knowledge is Power.” Since then, AFMS has become one of the fastest growing private companies in America as listed by Inc. Magazine in 2004 and 2005. AFMS has also become one of the most admired and well respected contract negotiation firms in the transportation industry. This workshop will discuss how to achieve parcel package designs which address the issues of controlling both costs and in-transit damage. A key element is the use of laboratory tests which simulate the unique parcel distribution environment. Designs can be evaluated and optimized in the lab to ensure effectiveness and success.
Testing concepts and techniques will be presented, with a focus on ISTA Procedure 3A, the protocol referenced in UPS's Tariff. Illustrative examples, drawn from actual laboratory and shippers' experiences, will show the do's, don'ts, and basic principles of good package design.

The workshop will include lunch and feature a morning tour of the UPS Chicago Area Consolidation Hub (CACH). This is a great opportunity to see packages going through one of the industry's largest and most advanced automating sorting facilities.

William Kipp is Associate Executive Director for International Safe Transit Association (ISTA), a trade group dedicated to the control of costs, damage and resources during the physical distribution of goods. He is a Certified Packaging Professional and member of the IoPP College of Fellows, an ISTA Certified Packaging Laboratory Professional and chair of ASTM International’s Subcommittee D10 (Packaging) on Product Fragility Assessment. Bill is a frequent speaker at national packaging conferences and has authored numerous articles related to packaging and product protection. He holds a BSEE degree from Stanford University.

As transportation and fuel costs rise, supply chain executives have been forced to consider unconventional solutions to reducing transportation costs. Imagine implementing a winter expedited freight reduction initiative that saved approximately 8% of the total outbound freight costs without carrier negotiation. Traditionally, some suppliers with temperature-sensitive products prevented damages by delivering items faster and reducing a product’s exposure to extreme weather conditions. In this session, a pharmaceutical company will share its secret to reducing expedited delivery costs through the use of weather data.

This includes hiring professional customer service staff, implementing process improvements, reducing delivery errors and implementing effective demand planning to prevent backorders and air shipments. “Our mission is to work with our customers to provide best-in-class client service and distribution options, with a focus on accuracy and reliability and elimination of non-value added costs.” With a strong knowledge of customer service, distribution and shipping, Kim is currently responsible for budget items of approximately $10 million. Her focus on process improvement and cost reduction has changed her role in the organization from General Accounting Manager to Senior Manager of Supply Chain Management. Kim’s team is focused on maintaining staff morale and high levels of consistent performance from everyone who interacts with the customers. In 2006, the Customer Satisfaction rating (measuring only very satisfied customers) increased to 82% from 62% in 2005. Kim Cox holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Wingate University and is a member of the PARCEL Forum Advisory Board.

In his first job as a teenager, Brian worked in his father's transportation business, both on the warehouse floor and driving delivery trucks. It was there that he first learned the critical impact of shipping on companies' supply chain operations. This experience inspired him to study logistics at Ohio State University. After graduating, Brian pursued his passion in several companies, including i2 Technologies, where he worked as a Solutions Manager helping corporate clients deploy new technologies and processes to optimize their supply chains. As Brian looks toward the future, he is helping to plan and execute the Neopost Loop One's development of powerful new features for existing products and innovative new products and services. Bakers Footwear Group (BFG) found a 40 percent faster and 25 percent cheaper way to bring its merchandise into the country via vessel. And airfreight arrives (direct to store) three to five days quicker with up to a 50% cash reduction. BFG’s Charles Kantz will profile how his company created a system that allows vendors to label merchandise, allowing products to fly direct from China to the stores or be put in a vessel bound for the West Coast.
